When he's kind to her, SHE'S the one who gets in trouble.
The ruder he is to her in public, the less likely anyone's going to look too closely at how he treats her the rest of the time.
He's making a show of it. The biggest show possible. That's why this isn't even a private message. Because he's TRYING TO PROTECT HER SO SHE DOESN'T GET CRUCIATED AGAIN.
What would you do? If someone important gave you a servant and then, if you got caught treating her like a friend, they cruciated her and made you watch?
You'd want to be as nasty as possible in the ways that didn't matter, so that you could protect her in the ways that counted. If you were clever, anyway. You'd call her every nasty name you could think of if it kept her from being tortured or sent back to the camps or given to someone like Carrow. Just like Neville and I both pretend in public that we're ashamed of our parents. You know my parents read the diaries and probably Neville's do to and he has to say horrid things about his parents even knowing they might see them and not know, like we do, that he's only saying what he has to say.
He could just keep his stupid gob shut. He doesn't have to do this at all. And if he'd say this sort of thing is WRONG, people would listen to HIM. Instead of thinking it's all right since he does it.
